Colonics or Colon Hydrotherapy is generally the
cleansing of the large intestine with water. I like to call it bathing as it
implies a much nicer and gentler procedure.
This is done by
letting
approximately 60 litres of water washing the colon during a period of
approximately forty-five minutes. As a holistic therapist we do not let
more than one litre (maximum) of water into the colon at any given time, as it is
very important not to overstretch the colon.
The colon is five to five and one-half feet long. It is important to
cleanse all
of it. The special equipment used will enable this process. Colonics, unlike
enemas, should have no internal pressure and therefore have no discomfort. If you have
a lot of gas you can experience slight cramping during the colonics which
is usually short lived as the gas leaves the colon.
The colon is
stimulated by this method. It is encouraged that those who feel enemas and
colonics are the same, have an enema first, then have a colonic and see all you
have missed removing from the colon. (A experienced enema user can do very
well with an enema, but it is hard to beat a colonics).
A view tube is available for observation
and all matter is eliminated into the sewage, there are no smells etc. You do nothing but lie back and relax.
The main difference between a normal colonics and a holistic colon hydrotherapy session is
that
-
the
therapist will be with you from the beginning to end, explaining everything to
you and attending to your needs during the session.
-
The therapist will give you
a deep belly massage to help eliminate waste from the colon.
-
As the nerves of the
colon respond to the soles of your feet your therapist will also
manipulate and stimulate the colon reflexes in your feet during your
colonic.
-
Massage of certain Meridian points also help stimulate
detoxification during the treatment.
-
Your holistic colon hydrotherapist will
often (not always) be trained in a variety of alternative healing methods like
Iridology, Acupuncture, Massage, Aromatherapy, Nutrition etc.
-
The therapist will be able to tell you after the session
which organs need more support / strengthening, if there is Candida
overgrowth or parasites in your system. How well your food is digested and
which foods are not digested hence better left from your diet.
-
Most holistic colon Hydrotherapists will be sensitive
enough to see or feel emotional /
spiritual issues relating to your digestion and well being
during the session.
Colonics are best done in the morning. It is advisable to relax before
and after the colonic and it is good to drink some water before and after colonics. Do not eat
2 hours before the Colonic. After
the colonic, you may take a detoxification bath and/or drink a green (eg. wheatgrass)
juice. The body must be free from digesting
solid food to repair and detoxify. It is better to eat
early so the body can repair and detoxify while sleeping. Therefore, eat at
least three hours before going to bed.
The colonic procedure is not offensive, not painful, and takes
approximately one
hour. The cost can be
between $70 and $120. Some clinics give a discount on a series of treatments.
Questions you want to ask to determine
the quality of session you will be getting:
-
What equipment is used? (gravity fed is the preferred method
over pressure)
-
What tubing is used? (single use is preferred over
sterilized)
-
Is the therapist a member of the ACHA or other association?
(not necessarily a guarantee for quality)
-
Who trained the therapist? (was it a very experienced
person)
-
What other qualifications does the practitioner have?
(related alternative health qualifications like massage, acupuncture,
acupressure, Ayurveda, herbalist, iridology etc all indicate that the
practitioner will be able to assist you better)
-
Will the practitioner be with you all the time? (MUST!!!!)
-
Will the practitioner explain to you physical / emotional
issues revealed during your session? (Important for your own health and
growth)
-
Will the practitioner make recommendations and suggest maybe
one product that could be helpful or refer you to
another practitioner?
-
Will the practitioner try to sell you a whole lot
of other stuff? (very unethical)
P.S. If you have any doubts about the self-healing power of your body,
consult your naturopath or health practitioner for advise!
